CADET NEWS

The first week of July was Cadet’s annual plant shutdown, when all of our employees enjoyed a well deserved break. With high gas prices, many of us were creative in our vacation plans, and kept things close to home.

Don Taylor got married on May 24th, 2009 and delayed his honeymoon with wife Kimberly until the July holiday. During this time, they camped at a RV Park in Home Valley, Washington, spending time hiking around the Fall Creek Falls and spelunking in Fall Creek Lava Caves. (For those of you non-natives, spelunking is exploring caves for recreational purposes.)

Harry Eckman and his wife, originally planned to be out of town during the holiday, but a family illness forced them to change plans, so instead enjoyed a visit from their granddaughter. With the traditional local Firework show at Fort Vancouver closed this year, they explored other firework events. After a movie at OMSI, they drove to Tom McCall Waterfront Park, and were very impressed with the fireworks display.

Armando, Kim and family went camping at Woodland Bottoms. They spent their days on the Columbia River, boating and playing on wave runners, and took in the fireworks display at Pekin Ferry. The last day of vacation was their daughter Hannah’s birthday, so they rented a party barge and spent another enjoyable day on the river.

Chelsea went sturgeon fishing for the very first time, near Astoria, Oregon. She learned the ropes from Mick Larsen, a long time fisherman, shown here holding the first catch. She reeled in a number of fish (many too big or too small to keep) and is now hooked on fishing.

Chelsea also visited the Blues Festival with her family, along the Portland riverfront. This is a great event for good food, music, and fireworks, with profits supporting the local Oregon food bank.

Laura Steele
Laura Steele, Marketing
5 year employee

Laura spent some of her vacation days visiting Newport Beach along the Oregon coast with family. If you’ve never been to the Oregon Coast, the scenery and long sandy beaches are spectacular. However, the “beach weather” is definitely not the beach weather of Hawaii or the Gulf Coast: warm sweatshirts come in much handier than swimsuits. Their beach cabin had Cadet Heaters running in the chilly mornings, even in July.
